Dear Parents,
You are about to embark on an important faith journey with your child. This might be a little scary and also might bring you some anxiety. This is normal. You are accepting the responsibility of raising your child in the Catholic faith. This begins at baptism. To prepare you for this great responsibility it is a good idea to take a class or to sit down and meet personally with either myself Deacon Jesus Espinoza. You probably have some questions, all of which we should be able to answer at the time of our meeting.
One frequent question is when and where do I learn this information. Typically we have a baptism class offered at 2:30pm on the 1st Sunday of the month. The Pastoral volunteers will help you by teaching you everything that we would teach you in person. Also the members of the clergy here are willing to meet with you individually if you reach out to them personally and set up a time to meet.
Parents also have questions regarding Godparents. Godparents are more important that you might think. There are more requirements to be a Godparent than a parent. They must also be instructed in the meaning of the sacrament and their importance regarding their responsibilities. They can join us for the class, see a clergy person personally or receive instruction at another parish. We can answer all your questions about Godparents and help you select suitable Godparents at the time of our meeting.
Another question people want to know is when can we do the baptism? At SEAS we have lots of options. So once you’ve done the class and selected suitable Godparents we can select a time and date for baptism. We typically baptize children either at a weekend mass or Saturday mornings at 10am.
Thank you for embarking on this important journey of faith with your child. If you have any other questions or requests, please bring them up at our meeting. I hope this process will ease your anxiety and help you to fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ, who tells us, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I will be with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20, NRSV, Catholic Edition, St. Mary’s Press 2000).
Sincerely in Christ,
